What is Jitsu?Jitsu is derived from the feudal Japanese art of Jiu-Jitsu (also known as Ju Jitsu, Ju Jutsu, Jiu Jujutsu). It is a practical and modern self-defense based martial art, incorporating joint locks, strikes and throws to deal with almost any attack imaginable. With a heavy emphasis on using an opponent's size and momentum against them, Jitsu is suitable for anyone; irrespective of age, strength, weight or gender. Jitsu Classes have a varied format, teaching a variety of techniques in a session. These vary, depending on the skill of the student, from personal safety to punches, kicks and improvised weapons (such as bottles), to armed and multiple attackers for the experienced practitioner. Jitsu teaches moderated responses. An unjustified and unwanted grab does not warrant the same response as a knife wielding mugger. Benefits of Jitsu Jitsu teaches balance, co-ordination and physical and emotional control. Fitness, although not initially necessary, usually develops with perseverance. Confidance, posture and awareness are also improved. Jitsu is also a social event. Highbury Jitsu Club is a part of the Jitsu Foundation, a part of the British Jiu Jitsu Association Governing Body and the largest single Jiu Jitsu Association in the UK. With nearly 30 Clubs in London alone and approx 3000 members country wide, events are held at a Regional and National level regularly. |
